Consultation opens for review of gas distribution code
21 March 2023
The state energy regulator is inviting feedback as it reviews the code of practice that governs gas distribution companies operating in Victoria.
The Essential Services Commission today published an issues paper for consultation as it prepares to review compliance and reporting obligations for energy businesses and remake the Gas Distribution Code of Practice.
The new code will allow the commission to apply its new enforcement framework ensuring gas distribution companies are adhering to their regulatory obligations.
The review aims to consider appropriate rules for new and existing gas connections in Victoria and align the code with community expectations, government policies and updated national regulations. It also aims to clarify obligations for gas distributors, removing inconsistencies and overlaps with other energy rules.
As part of the review, the commission will also update gas distribution licences to bring them in line with the new code and recent changes to retail licences and electricity distribution licences.
Feedback on the consultation paper can be submitted via the Engage Victoria website up until 5 pm on 4 May.
The draft of the new code of practice is expected to be released in August and more public consultation will be held at that time.
