Simply Energy has paid a $5,000 penalty after an alleged breach of the Energy Retail Code relating to the wrongful disconnection of a customer account.
Simply Energy penalty notice 2021 (wrongful disconnection)
Simply Energy has paid $5,000 after we issued a penalty notice on 13 August 2021.
We issued the penalty notice to Simply Energy for the alleged wrongful disconnection of a visually impaired, elderly woman’s electricity in April 2021.
Simply Energy mistakenly disconnected the woman's power 18 days earlier than agreed, leaving her without electricity for more than 10 hours.
We allege Simply Energy did not comply with clause 118(1)(a) of the Energy Retail Code because, in erroneously disconnecting the customer’s electricity supply on 21 April 2021, Simply Energy did not use its best endeavours to disconnect the customer’s electricity supply in accordance with the date requested by the customer, being 10 May 2021.
