This code regulates some elements of customer metering.
Electricity Customer Metering Code of Practice
Overview
This code applies to:
- each distributor under its distribution licence or, if applicable, a condition of its exemption from the requirement to hold a licence
- each retailer under its retail licence or, if applicable, a condition of its exemption from the requirement to hold a licence
- each customer who is obliged to comply with this code under a distribution contract
- each person who takes supply from an embedded network
- each metering provider who is obliged to comply with this code under a contract with the distributor or the retailer who engaged the metering provider
- each responsible person who is not a licensed distributor or a licensed retailer, under the applicable condition of its exemption from the requirement to hold a licence
- each embedded generator who is obliged to comply with this code under a distribution contract.
Our review of regulatory instruments in 2008 resulted in updates to this code.
Current version of the code
Pending code changes
On 1 December 2021 our codes were deemed to be codes of practice made under Part 6 of the Essential Services Commission Act 2021. We will be reviewing all codes as a result of their changed legal status prior to 31 December 2025. The Electricity Customer Metering Code has not been reviewed at this time for that purpose. Minor changes were made on 1 March 2022 as a consequence of the remaking of the Energy Retail Code of Practice

On 1 December 2021 the Electricity Customer Metering Code was deemed a code of practice made under Part 6 of the Essential Services Commission Act 2001. Below are the versions of the Electricity Customer Metering Code that were applicable prior to this change of legal status of the code. The numbering of the code versions will continue until a review is undertaken to reflect its changed legal status.
